02.02.17 New international cooperation at the Thurgau University of Teacher Education

Despite the highly challenging point of departure, the international office at the Thurgau University of Teacher Education, under the direction of Gerit Jaritz, has successfully arranged three new contracts of cooperation with English-speaking universities. As a consequence, Dr. Priska Sieber, the rector of the Thurgau University of Teacher Education, has recently signed agreements with the American University of Hawaii at Manoa and with the English Universities of Worcester and Roehamton /London.

The Thurgau University of Teacher Education already has a manifold network of international partner universities. In the context of bilateral agreements, students and members of staff at the Thurgau University of Teacher Education can visit these universities for periods of study and further education. Due to the continuous high demands for study visits in English speaking countries, it has become clear that there was a further need for cooperation in the USA and Great Britain, both regions which are inundated with cooperation proposals from all over the world.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a public university with a strong emphasis on research. It has 14 different colleges with an ethnically diverse student body. Starting with the study year 2017/18, students of the course for secondary school teachers (Sek I) can now visit this university as part of the mobility programme free of charge. They will not only be able to attend subject specific modules there, but also didactic modules for all study courses. In addition, a good personal relationship has already been established with the College of Education and with the Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education which is also part of the same university. The same is true for the English University of Worcester which is located in the beautiful market town of the same name. The University of Worcester has about 10'000 students and is well known for the modern university campus and in particular for "the Hive – England’s most celebrated university library". The Institute of Education offers bachelor and master courses in the field of educational science, curative education as well as primary and secondary education. First common interests were found in the field of didactics in mathematics. An initial research project is under consideration.
The agreement with the Roehampton University in London is currently limited to a mobility programme. The Roehampton University also has a strong School of Education. The planned exchange programme for lectures should provide further information in respect to additional cooperation activities in the future.
We are delighted that we have been able to establish new cooperations with two excellent partner universities in Great Britain, particularly with Brexit looming and with British universities revealing a very hesitant attitude towards new European cooperations.
